Roads/Sidewalks

The Township maintains 363 km of Road, of these 343 km are maintained year round of these Roads 90% are hard top which consists of asphalt, surface treatment or micro-surfaced.  The Township has a full complement of staff and equipment to maintain and repair the roads year around.  Most construction and reconstruction is contracted out to private firms.

In 2009, the Township completed a roads management study that identified the state of each road and recommended a five-year capital works and roads management plan, including estimated costs and funding levels.  Council and staff use this plan as a basis for each year’s planning and budgeting.

In the Villages of Morrisburg, Iroquois and Williamsburg, the Township maintains sidewalks along some of its roads and streets.  The sidewalks are generally along busier roadways in order to ensure pedestrian safety.


The Township uses the Provincial Minimum Standard Roads Policy as legislated by Ontario Regulation 239/02.  The regulation addresses routine patrolling, snow accumulation, ice on roadways, potholes, shoulder drop-offs, cracks, debris, lighting, signs, traffic control and bridge and deck spall/discontinuity for municipal roadways.  The purpose of minimum maintenance standards is to reduce liabilities, provide a consistent level of service and reduce long-term costs by maintaining this essential infrastructure.

Permits

The Township issues the following permits for the use of its road allowances:

Applications for permits are also available at the Municipal Office.  There is a processing fee for each permit.  The Township will determine whether the request will be permitted and the standards, material and any equipment required.  All costs relating to the work are the responsibility of the applicant.

Winter Parking Regulations

Please be advised that parking on Municipal roads is prohibited between 11:00 pm and 8:00 am from November 15 to April 15.  A vehicle which is parked in a manner interfering with snow clearing or removal operations may be issued a ticket and/or removed at the owner’s expense.  Please note that parking in any Municipal owned parking lot is prohibited between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am year around.

Ice and Snow

It is unlawful to push snow onto or across a public roadway or onto another property without the authorization of the property owner.  Dangerous accumulations of ice and snow are to be removed from a roof where they overhang public roadways, sidewalks or public access areas to buildings.

County Roads

The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry maintains all County Roads ie. County Road 2.
