Roadways and Sidewalks
The Township maintains over 384 kilometers of roads. Over half of the roads are asphalt or surface treated while 47% of the roads are gravel based. The Township has a full complement of staff and equipment to maintain and repair the roads year around. Most construction and reconstruction is contracted out to private firms.
In 2003, the Township completed a roads management study that identified the state of each road and recommended a five-year capital works and roads management plan, including estimated costs and funding levels. Council and staff use this plan as a basis for each year's planning and budgeting.
In the villages of Morrisburg, Iroquois and Williamsburg, the Township maintains sidewalks along some of its roads and streets. The sidewalks are generally along busier roadways in order to ensure pedestrian safety.
The Township uses the provincial Minimum Standard Roads Policy as legislated by Ontario Regulation 239/02. The regulation addresses routine patrolling, snow accumulation, ice on roadways, potholes, should drop-offs, cracks, debris, lighting, signs, traffic control, and bridge and deck spall/discontinuity for municipal roadways. The purpose of minimum maintenance standards is to reduce liabilities, provide a consistent level of service and reduce long-term costs by maintaining this essential infrastructure.
Permits
The Township issues permits for the use of its road allowances. It issues the following permits:
