Running for Municipal Council

Make a difference in South Dundas. Running for Municipal Council gives you the opportunity to:

• Set local priorities and influence key decisions
• Share your experience, perspective, and ideas
• Address the issues that matter to residents
• Play an active role in local democracy

As a member of Council, you represent the people of South Dundas. You help guide policy, approve budgets, and make decisions that shape the Municipality's future. You attend Council meetings, review reports, and work with staff to ensure the municipality is responsible, transparent, and financially stable. Council’s decisions affect roads, recreation, fire services, water and wastewater, planning, and community growth. Your role matters. If you care about your community and want to step forward, consider putting your name on the ballot.

To run for municipal office you must be nominated and qualify. To be a qualified candidate you must be:
- a Canadian Citizen; and
- at least 18 years old; and
- reside in the Municipality of South Dundas or be the owner or tenant of land in South Dundas, or the spouse of an owner or tenant of land in South Dundas.
The following individuals are not eligible to run:
A person serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution
A corporation
A person acting as an executor, trustee, or in any other representative capacity
A person who ceases to be a Canadian citizen
A person who is not a resident, owner, or tenant of land in the municipality, or the spouse of such a person
A municipal employee or local board employee, unless they take an unpaid leave of absence beginning the day of nomination and resign if elected
The Clerk, Treasurer, Integrity Commissioner, Auditor General, Ombudsman, or similar officer of the municipality (whether or not an employee)
A judge of any court, a Member of Provincial Parliament, or a Member of Parliament or the Senate
A provincial public servant within the meaning of the Public Service of Ontario Act, 2006
A federal public servant within the meaning of the Public Service Employment Act
A person prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or the Municipal Act, 2001
A person who violated financial filing requirements in a previous election
A person convicted of a corrupt practice under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or of a related criminal offence
All candidates must book an appointment with the Clerk’s Office to file their nomination papers. Nominations cannot be filed without a scheduled appointment.

One (1) piece of government-issued photo identification
Nomination fee: $200 for Head of Council; $100 for all other positions
Once your nomination is officially filed, your name will be posted on the municipal website and you may begin campaigning.

Running for School Board Trustee

Serving as a school board trustee is a meaningful way to support students, families, and your local community. Trustees are elected officials who help guide the direction of publicly funded school boards — setting priorities and representing the community’s interests in education.

Where to File Your Nomination

Each school board designates a specific municipality for receiving nominations. If you are running for a school board trustee position within South Dundas’s geographic jurisdiction, you must file your nomination with the designated municipality listed below — not necessarily with the Municipality of South Dundas.

Trustees are responsible for setting the overall direction of the school board — not the day-to-day operations of individual schools. Trustees work collaboratively as part of a team to make decisions that benefit the entire school system.
Key responsibilities include:
Setting policies and priorities for the board
Approving the board’s annual budget
Hiring and evaluating the Director of Education
Representing the interests of students, families, and the community
Participating in board and committee meetings
Ontario has four types of publicly funded school boards:
English Public
English Separate (Catholic)
French Public
French Separate (Catholic)
When running for trustee, you must choose one board and one geographic area. Each board has its own trustee positions.
To run for school board trustee under the Municipal Elections Act, you must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be a Canadian citizen
Reside in the school board’s area of jurisdiction, or be an owner or tenant of land there (or the spouse of such a person)
Not be legally prohibited from voting
Not be disqualified by any other applicable legislation
Additional requirements for Catholic board candidates:
You must be Roman Catholic
You must be listed as a separate school supporter for school board purposes
