June is Recreation & Parks Month!

Earl Baker Park Structure

June is Recreation and Parks Month! This movement began in 2005 to promote the benefits of recreation and parks for all aspects of citizens health. This year’s theme is “Every Journey Matters,” which reminds us that everyone’s recreation looks different! Recreation isn’t just sports or being outside, it’s any activity done for enjoyment! If it supports your overall wellbeing and you enjoy doing an activity, it counts. Throughout June, we’ll be highlighting various recreation opportunities, so keep an eye out!

75 Hours of Recreation & Parks Challenge

To encourage South Dundas residents to get involved in different activities, the Municipality of South Dundas is participating in the “75 Hours of Recreation & Parks” challenge. By tracking your family’s recreation throughout the month through one of the colouring pages here or in your own way, you can be entered into a draw for a prize.

Make sure to submit your tracked hours in person to the Municipal Office at 34 Ottawa St, Morrisburg or email them to epalmerguindon@southdundas.com before June 30 at 12pm!

Weeks of Recreation & Parks Month

Week One - Explore Your Community

This week, explore South Dundas! Visit a park or trail that you have never been to or attend a community or sporting event. If you’re wondering what parks are around South Dundas, visit https://www.southdundas.com/recreation-tourism/parks to discover one of the over 20 parks around South Dundas. Some parks also have Ball Diamonds, so make sure to catch a game while you visit!

Other ideas for exploring your community include biking, geocaching, or taking a photography walk.

Week Two - Slow Down

While recreation can often be perceived as fast paced, high energy activities, recreation can also be slow and low energy. This week, slow down by taking a walk along a trail, reading outside, watching the sunset/sunrise, or partaking in an activity that encourages you to slow down.

You can also sign up for Chair Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Art Classes or Cooking classes at www.southdundas.com, which offers an opportunity to participate in slower paced recreation with skilled teachers.

Week Three - Enjoy the Amenities

As the weather warms up, the beaches are a great place to spend soaking up the sun and engaging in recreation. Some waterfront ideas for recreation include walking along the waterfront, playing at the splash pad, playing beach volleyball, and of course, swimming!

Swim Lesson registration is also open if you are looking for your children to develop skills in the water. Lessons are also available for adults, and lessons and certifications are available for youth looking to advance their swimming or to become a lifeguard.

Week Four - Get Active

This month, get active by participating in or signing up for one of the various fitness classes available. Sign up for Kick Boxing or Boot Camp, which begin at the end of June or early July. These offer an opportunity to engage in a variety of exercises for all fitness levels. Registration is open at www.southdundas.com

Alternatively, get active by using Lending Library equipment. From water sports equipment to different sports equipment, the Lending Library gives residents the opportunity to get active through this equipment for FREE! Appointments for pickup and drop off are mandatory and requests must be made at least 48 hours before requested use date.To book, email Scott at sheggie@southdundas.com
