Media Release: Municipality of South Dundas Recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On Wednesday, September 30, the Municipality of South Dundas joins communities across Canada in observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and their families and communities.

 

The Municipality recognizes that meaningful reconciliation cannot be achieved through a single day of observance. It requires an ongoing commitment to understanding the truth about the past, acknowledging its lasting impacts on Indigenous Peoples, and working to build relationships grounded in respect, trust and accountability.

 

As part of that commitment, Municipal staff took part in a Truth and Reconciliation training session. The training session reflects the Municipality's view that education is a vital step. By deepening their understanding, staff are better prepared to serve all residents with respect and to consider reconciliation in the work they do every day.

 

"As a municipality, we have a responsibility to do more than acknowledge this day. We want our staff and our community to understand why it matters and to carry that understanding forward. Reconciliation is something we are committed to working toward year-round, and we know we still have much to learn,” said Jason Broad, Mayor, Municipality of South Dundas.

 

Flags at the South Dundas Municipal Centre will be lowered on September 30 as a gesture of respect and remembrance.

 

The Municipality encourages residents to join in reflection by wearing orange, learning about the experiences of residential school Survivors and their families, and supporting local Indigenous organizations, events and businesses.
